One for One’ - The Second Year 

Educational sponsorships for the second year of educational support towards WGAA's ‘One for One’ initiative have started coming in this month. Ex-Welhamites around the globe are eagerly awaiting for the half yearly examination results of the girls they have committed to sponsoring for a minimum of 5 years at the Aasraa trust. They are keenly following the progress of their sponsored child, revelling in the smallest of their academic successes. These Exies fully support and understand the adversities their sponsored girls have faced to reach their present situation. 

Living in basti’s in some of the poorest and dirtiest slums of Dehra Dun, the education of these girls was often sacrificed to provide a male siblings’ school fees. They barely had a temporary roof over their heads let alone a designated place at home to study. In the face of their parents’ poverty, they were often made to support their family income by selling trinkets at street lights or by working as house help. Their lives  underwent a drastic change when the outreach team at the Aasraa trust in Dehra Dun identified these children and counselled their parents. They were eventually able to convince these parents regarding the relevance of educating their children, especially their daughters.

The Welham Girls Alumni Association feels immensely proud that so many Ex-Welhamites have stepped forward to sponsor the education of these girls. We reach out again to the large Ex-Welhamite community to help us to educate more these children, these little brave hearts fighting to attain their best despite the adverse circumstances they have been born into. With our support, they may be able to realise their inherent potential. They will have a chance to come out of the basti’s and fulfil their dreams of becoming teachers, doctors or sportswomen. They will have been given a chance – a chance to become tomorrow’s women of substance.
